Democracy vs Dictatorship Debate #G2

Could a dictatorship work better than a democracy?

A dictatorship is better

Side Score: 26
VS.

A democracy is better

Side Score: 23
1 point

Opening Statement:

Dictatorships have been know to not work but there are many reasons why a dictatorship is better than a democracy. Dictatorships can offer low crime rate, the ruler will know what the people need, and there is flexibility in the economy which causes growth.

Side: A dictatorship is better

Argument #1:

In a dictatorship there can be more changes since only one person is in rule and laws and other changes don't have to go though a lot of processes.

Side: A dictatorship is better
1 point

There is no fighting amongst government officials to paralyse progress and there is no time is taken away for people to agree on decisions.

When a dictator enforces a law he/she has total power to make sure it is enforced properly and can make severe penalties of infractions of law

Many dictators over the years have shown and given the name that a dictatorship is bad, they make decisions for themselves, not putting the peoples opinions in view, making it a hard and unfair place to live, dictators make laws that fit themselves, not the people and not the country. It is unfair for the people who live their not getting their opinion looked at and not having a say in anything.

Only the ruler get a say in the rules, people don't get a say so it might not be fair for the people of the country. It could make it worse for the people in the country and only satisfy the ruler.

In a democracy there is a majority over minority way of voting and in a large democracy the process of counting and collecting votes can be very inefficient. With a dictatorship one person controls what laws are passed and makes sure the public support the decision. Then there is no inequality.

Side: A dictatorship is better

Dictatorships never put any value or power in their citizens in which any government is based for, it’s people. In history and in practice the voice of the people is not put into any consideration in the leader’s mind. In practice the leader is always doing right for the country and is striving for a better future for the country, the country of which is him because he over rules the country and the people are just people who must follow or else. All dictators in their mind always feel they are doing good for the country in which the people the dictator believes should value.

Side: A democracy is better
1 point

Second Argument:

When one person rules it creates a strong government because there is no one to revolt against a new law and there is no other body or authority to veto decisions. In times of crisis they have the ability to react to new developments and implement new plans. Dictators have the need to promote development and get rid of social difference and has better control over human development. This creates a more stable government because no one else has a say and laws will be passed quicker if they help the country. Finally, when a dictator enforces a law he/she has total power to make sure it is enforced properly and can make severe penalties of infractions of law

Side: A dictatorship is better
taliascott(11) Disputed

Because no one has a say, it could be unfair what the dictator is doing, again over the years dictators have shown that they make decisions for themselves and not for the people of the country, showing that they don't care about the people and that they don't care about anything but making themselves happy which isn't a healthy place to live.

Side: A democracy is better
Lauren0824(11) Disputed

Even though the dictator may not allow the people to vote, they know what they are doing for the government. If the people disagree with a new law the dictator has the power to republish the law and makes sure the people are happy with it. He/she can do this because they have total power and no one can stop their decision.

Side: A dictatorship is better
1 point

Third Argument:

A country run by a dictator shows less crime rate because of strict laws and punishments. Even if it is a very small infraction there is a heavy punishment.

They also have the power to make sure laws are enforced properly.

They can control human development and they can promote development and get rid of social difference. Dictatorships have more growth economically than any other type of government. With one ruler it maintains focus and direction because of personal discipline. Even though it may be strict the government and country benefit in growth and development

In a dictatorship sometimes crime rate can be low because of all the harsh punishments in the government that are built in unlike in any democracy. But another problem any dictatorship would have is not crime on the people but crime on the government, corruption. Dictatorships always start from the takeover of the previous government lead by one person with no system of succession which leads to corruption no matter what. Lets look at Hitler’s regime, he was elected as chancellor by his democratic party but later kicked the president out of position and held both chancellor and president at the same time, allowing him to take his Nazi party into full swing sweeping the country. Many other dictatorships like Hitler’s never had a country that started in dictatorship. Like Hitler’s dictatorship, many other dictatorships fell or couldn’t fully continue because the dictator had died or was kicked because of the corruption of succession such as North Korea’s leadership which was a dictatorship but later changed to a Socialist State to represent the interest of the people (supposedly).

Hashem(11) Clarified

Human development is not a problem in a democracy because the people choose where they want to go in a any section of the government making them more mature among each other. Development is the main goal of any democracy so that the people can build upon one another to create a better system for everyone if ever the minority is not included.

Side: A dictatorship is better
taliascott(11) Disputed

There could be less crime rate because people know they will die for doing the smallest of things. The punishment for committing a crime is over the top, if the dictator doesn't like your religion, you will be killed. If you are someone that the dictator doesn't like, you will be killed. The punishments for the crime you have committed does not fit properly, the punishment is almost always death.

Side: A democracy is better
Lauren0824(11) Disputed
1 point

Yes the punishment may be harsh but it will not be death if you do something small. The punishment helps keep the country safe because people don't want to pay fines and get in trouble. It stops people from breaking the law and stops the crime rate because they don't like the idea of the punishment. Just because the dictator may not like you they are not going to kill you.

On the other side of your argument maybe democracies have not harsh enough punishments. Even though there may be death penalties these penalties show results and will cause people not to do the crime again.

Side: A dictatorship is better

Closing statement:

In the end a dictatorships offer a better form of government for the reasons that they allow more change, they decrease crime rates, and also there is stability in the government so it is sustainable.

Side: A dictatorship is better

Opening statement: A democracy is better than a dictatorship and these facts prove why. People have freedom, it promotes citizen choice, and the government is transparent, it is fair to everyone and no one is ignored.

Side: A democracy is better
1 point

Argument 1:

Government is completely transparent

Having an open government insures the trust and cooperation of the citizen and gives more public knowledge. Allowing a citizen to be more knowledgeable is key to insuring the citizen and the government are doing the right choice and taking the right action. This way information can spread faster instead of being in public disclosure allowing more time for the government. This also re-purposes the action and work that is happening in the government in a way the public can understand. This may make the public require more information but is that a bad thing if the government is doing right? True transparency in the government would stop corruption and scandals from happening because the government would not want the public to know about it. Without government complete transparency like in democracy the country wouldn’t feel as secure or be as informed as it is to making the right decisions.

Side: A democracy is better
Lauren0824(11) Disputed

Since the ultimate power lies with the people, they can influence the leader to make bad choices that affect the government. Also it can cause people getting more freedom than others when it comes to social status. But with a dictatorship, the dictator promotes human development and stops social difference

Side: A dictatorship is better
Hashem(11) Disputed

Yes, the citizens have a great influence in the vote of members, leaders, and rules helping shape the country in the point of view for the people. Allowing the people to connect with the politics and government makes the citizens feel connected with their country and insures the government does good for everyone. This also allows a good representation of candidates to control the government because they are elected by the people in an open fashion. This creates a society where everyone is equal in power and can understand one another's ideas since everyone has a voice in the government.

Side: A democracy is better
taliascott(11) Disputed

In a dictatorship, the ruler usually forces their way into ruling, but a democracy gives people room to help with improvement in the country, to make it a better place. Everything that the people say goes to the government where they decide if it is good for the country so it is fair and stops bad choices

Side: A dictatorship is better
1 point

Argument 2:

The most obvious, but still very important, you have much more freedom in a democracy than a dictatorship, you have the freedom of speech. You can say what you think is right. With majority and minority, the majority does win, but with freedom of speech the minority get a say to say what they think is right as well so they aren’t just ignored. You have the freedom of religion. There are many different religions in a democracy and you can be any of them that you want without the restriction. But in a dictatorship leaders don’t like specific religions and go and kill them. Like Hitler did with Jews, he killed 6 million Jews, and he really had no reason to. He may have not liked Jews, but he killed innocent people who had done nothing to him. You have the freedom to be who you are, not having to hide something so you don’t get killed or severely punished for something that you can’t change. When someone has committed a crime, the punishment is reasonable for what they had done. If you are someone that the dictator just doesn’t like the punishment is most likely going to be death.

When the freedom is in the people this can create a problem. It can become a problem because when people are uneducated about major issues and it can lead to majority voting for the wrong decision.

People can make bad decisions, but there are still many people to go against it and give their opinion on why it should be better for something else, a dictator doesn't put the people into consideration meaning he/she could make bad decisions for the people which in ways can be worse.

Side: A democracy is better
Hashem(11) Disputed

There is no wrong or right decision in democracy, it is just what the people want. They are being educated through government transparency and can easily resolve any situation or referendum through vote like in the "Brexit" where true democracy is being put in place.

Side: A democracy is better
class-ishaan(10) Disputed

In a democracy often then not with the case of minority and majority. The minority get the short end of the stick. For example in the case of electing presidents the minority would not get the ruler they want and would it wouldn't be fair for them. Since there is freedom of speech the minority can say what they think but that doesn't really help them since often than not they wouldn't change leaders.

Side: A dictatorship is better
taliascott(11) Disputed
1 point

Minority may not get a big say in something, but they don't get completely thrown away, they still get basic rights to say what they think is best and it gets put into consideration, whereas in a dictatorship there is no majority or minority so the dictator doesn't get anything from the people making it unfair towards the people if they have a concern about something. The people don't vote so they probably don't get the leader they want at all. At least in a democracy you have a chance getting the leader you feel will be the best for the country.

Side: A democracy is better
Hashem(11) Disputed

Yes the minority do not win their voice and say all the time but they are accepted and are put in mind for all members in the government meaning that anyone who is part the minority only lets the choice go in the right direction for everyone since the vote goes to all. In an extreme case if the vote went to 52%-48% the government would take both vote into consideration and create a new more flexible referendum. In the case of a presidential election which in most cases is not in available in true democracy, the president can always change and implement new ideas with the right people backing him up. Its not like a one man stand where he gets it all.

Side: A democracy is better

Argument 3:

For an all around government to be perfect the people must have a secure amount of freedom and human rights in their country as in democracy. The top 25 most stable and best economically fitted country are mainly free countries. This correlation of freedom and economy is no coincidence, freedom is the baseline for a good economy of the choices you have for investment, trade, and ownership without having the government take or have an interest in any of your market. The freedom also helps the citizens exercise their universal rights upon one another to insure a safer, secure, and the maturity of the people develop in a way where everyone has the same option of religion or practice, education, job and so forth. To exercise freedom allows equality and no disparity among the the people’s country. Freedom is essential for perfect government of democracy to continue development of humanity and prosperity in all sections work.

It may seem that freedom is always the answer to a perfect government but in many cases it can lead to a huge problem. So with different types of freedom it can affect and offend people in many ways. Since people have freedom of speech and religion, people that do not agree with other religions can say what they want and that can offend others. Also it may seem that discrimination does not exist any more but in the US black and white people are still different and do not get the same amount of rights.

The freedom of speech can lead to people saying things about each others religion, but at least you can live in the country rather than being killed for something that you can't help. Hitler killed 6 million innocent people, just for being Jews. There is nothing about that, that is fair. Your religion doesn't determine who you are as a person.

In the U.S. the government built upon their problems and minority so they can become a better country as a Republic and not a democracy you so exemplified for. Freedom is the main source of diversity in all sections, if any person is offended then he/she can explain to the government for a better system with back-up from the people, of course the people would be educated by the government and transparency to support both sides of the argument. In the end both sides would be able to support each other like in U.S. controversial law to allow gays which has lead to other problems but are still leading a pathway for diversity and better freedom.

Yes many of the top countries are free but not all free countries are necessarily democracies. Also there are many countries that have strived under non democratic ruling such as China and South Korea. Countries such as India have actually been doing worse after switching to a democratic government.

Closing statement:

Through all this, our points prove a democracy is better, the government is fair to everyone, giving everyone the right to say what they think is best for the country unlike in a dictatorship where the leader has all the rights and the people have nothing. You also have freedom to do what you want, say what you think for the better of the country. You can be who you are and not have to hide something just to be able to live in a country, and if the dictator finds out that you are something he does not approve you could be killed. Not sent out the country. Your life could be ended, just because you are something the dictator doesn’t like. Overall a democracy is more fair towards the people of the country and always has room for improvement if the people have a concern but people don’t get that in a dictatorship.
