Democracy vs Dictatorship Debate #G3

Could a dictatorship work better than a democracy?

A dictatorship is better

VS.

A democracy is better

Opening statement : From what people have heard in the past they might think that a democracy is better than a dictatorship for sure however that is not the case, because if the power is put in the hands of a good dictator the dictatorship can work really well. In the past there have been some terrible dictators but we are here to talk about some very successful dictatorships that were carried out very well which is how we will prove that a dictatorship is better than a democracy.

Argument 1: A dictatorship is better than a democracy because a dictatorship government has a faster and more efficient process for the system since one person is making the decisions. For example, if anything bad were to take place such as a war or a natural disaster the dictator will quickly come up with a solution that he or she believes will work and will carry out with it. While in a democracy it would take a very long time to gather all the votes and see what they are going to do. The government progresses very rapidly and no government officials have to argue for an agreement.

It's really rare that a good dictator comes for the country. The dictator usually feels good because he has full power so most of the dictators decide to do bad choices

i could give you a list of 14 benevolent dictators when i bet the only bad dictators that you can come up with are about 5, so it is not true that there are less benevolent dictators than there are bad dictators.

If the decisions are fast means that the decision might be wrong but when a group of people decide it mans that the decision is usually correct

Side: A democracy is better

That is not completely true because if a decision is made fast then the action will take place faster which will allow the problem to be resolved faster. In a democracy it will take a very long time because people have to vote and the votes have to be counted.

I agree with Kareem and I want to add: There is a majority when it comes to political selections because if there is a lot of people agreeing with this choice of leader, you know it's a right choice

Side: A democracy is better
3 points

A lot of people agreeing with the choice of the leader doesn't always work, because the people may not be educated enough to know what is best for the country. And the thoughts of the minority are not taken for consideration. Many times in a democracy leaders say what they know the people want to hear, this may not always be the best for the country and the leader may also be lying. Sometimes people also vote for leaders they may relate to, such as leaders from similar backgrounds.

if there is more people with bad intentions than there are people with good intentions the majority will cause the government to fail because the majority of the people want what is bad for the people. Also with majority rules, the minority is ignored causing peoples freedom to be less than the freedom that people of the majority have

Side: A dictatorship is better

In dictatorships, laws are enforced better because they give harsh punishments. Harsh punishments can be bad because people who go against the law are hurt. With that being said citizens are less likely to go against the law again because they are scared of the punishment causing respect to the government.

Side: A dictatorship is better
KareemS(10) Disputed

Instead of using harsh punishments the government can educate the people better and to make them understand the right thing. Harsh punishments make people scared and they become scared to talk out

Educating the people doesn't always work and isn't very efficient and can result in high crime rates, harsh punishments encourages the citizens not to break any laws and results in low crime rates.

education doesn't always work for some people because education and decision making are two different things. no matter how you educate someone they will either have a bad past or something causing their actions to be bad and harsh punishments can make them realize what is wrong and what is right. this is proven in many examples where people who have bad children send their children to prison for small amounts of time, when the kids return they change who they are and stop their bad actions

that is true but if in a democracy people don't receive harsh punishments they won't learn and they will repeat their bad actions, if someone learns their lessons from a harsh punishment they will learn and won't repeat their bad actions. some forms of parenting are the same, where parents punish their children because of their bad actions, these harsh punishments cause children to be more polite and not make bad decisions, government in some ways is a bigger scale of parenting

Side: A dictatorship is better

If there are less harsh punishments then people will commit more crimes since the punishment is less harsh while in a dictatorship people are will be more scared to commit crimes since the punishments are very harsh.

Argument 3:

A dictatorship is so much more stable than a democracy for many reasons .There is one person who knows what they're doing and making all the decisions, the decisions since they are being made by one person they are a lot more final. Laws are made faster and much more efficiently. While in a democracy decision are made by big numbers of people, only the thoughts of the majority are taken to account, and the thoughts of the minority are ignored. Decisions have a long process of being made and are not always very strong.

Side: A dictatorship is better
KareemS(10) Disputed

A dictatorship is not stable whatsoever. In a dictatorship, the is a high chance of a revolutions because people are not treated good because of harsh punishments and bad decision making by the dictator. This makes it so the people are not happy so at any time there can be a revolution. For example, The Egyptian dictator ruled for 30 years and people thought it was stable but suddenly there was a revolution and in 1 moth he was taken down. This shows that dictatorships are not stable. The USA was a democracy for years and it was very stable.

As I said before, your only thinking of bad dictatorships. There have been many successful dictatorships as there have been many failed democracies. When the power is put into the hands of a good dictator he knows what is best for the country and takes care of it, he makes good decisions which are stable and efficient.

A dictatorship is not stable because all the leaders do is make useless strict laws and torture people if they go even a little against it. For example, Hitler. He made really useless and strict laws that put a bad significance for him.

Your only thinking bad dictatorships, there have been many good dictatorships just like there have been many bad democracies. Habib Bourguiba for example was a dictator who ruled Tunisia from 1957 to 1987. He lead the fight for Tunisia's independence from France. He became the first President of the Republic of Tunisia. During his rule women were granted the right to vote, polygamy was stopped, and the country moved from a one-party system to a multi-party system.

A dictatorship can be more stable than a democracy because in a democracy there is majority rules, if the minority has good intentions and the majority has bad intentions than bad decisions are made for the country. In a dictatorship on the other hand, if the dictator is good he will do good and keep the government stable.

Closing Statement: Overall, a dictatorship is better than a democracy because if the people have less say it is less likely to have government corruption because the people can’t make bad decisions for their country also it would help the government grow more rapidly since decisions are made faster. A Dictatorship would also have a lower crime rate as people are afraid of the harsh punishment by the government.

Closing Statement:

In conclusion, democracy has more chances than dictatorships. In democracy people get what they want because they voted for it so it makes the people happy. In a democracy, people might not be happy with the dictator but it is very hard to remove him from power. This is why a democracy is better that a dictatorship.

Side: A democracy is better

Argument #1: A democracy is better that a dictatorship because a democracy gives the people lots of freedom and gives them the ability to vote for their leader. This makes the people understand more about their country and people become more interested and gives them the feeling of responsibility and a chance to speak out. This means that the people have all freedom so if the leader of the country isn’t doing well they can be removed peacefully because it is a democracy. Unlike a dictatorship, if the people don't like the leader, to remove him from power needs violence.

If everyone has the same amount of power with voting and rights the government is granting freedom to people who can't make decisions for themselves. If someone with bad intentions has the same power as someone with good intentions they will do bad for their country and wont be stopped as they have equal power.

Majority always wins, and we cannot trust and hope 1 dictator can be a good leader. This is really hopeless and there is so much hope in democracy because people know they are safe

First of all, for a leader to be changed in a dictatorship it doesn't always have to result in violence. Secondly, it isn't always good if people have a lot of freedom because they can start going against certain things and start doing bad things that may affect and throw the government off. In a dictatorship the power is controlled so people have certain rights. If the leader is a good leader then the country will be led properly and the people will be happy with the government.

Freedom for the people cant always be good, because it is possible the people can make mistakes which can corrupt the government. And freedom for the people ca also lead to decisions being made slower and laws less enforced.

Argument #3:

A democracy is better than a dictatorship because there is justice in a democracy and rules are fair. The reason for this is that there are hundreds of people vote together to make the laws which insures that they are for the good of the people and not for the benefit of specific people. In a dictatorship, the ruler makes all the rules and they might not be good for the people but they benefit the ruler only. There priority is to remain in power and they don't care about their people at all. Also, having more people talking about one decision results in less mistakes because when people share their ideas it makes it so the right solution or agreement happens and that the decision is right for the country. Unlike in a dictatorship, there is one person who is making all the decisions and that might not be good.

Side: A democracy is better
basemsousou Disputed

As I said before, in a dictatorship a dictator is not always bad he could be good and make good decisions to benefit his people and make them happy and also evolve the country. Dictators make all the decisions and that is much more faster and efficient for the government because it could rapidly keep growing as this link says http://occupytheory.org/list-of-pros-and-cons-of-dictatorship/ . While on the other hand in a democracy the people do get to make the decisions but that takes a lot of time due to voting and counting up votes. Even though there is a group of people making the decisions it will take them a long time since they have to argue about it and that could take a long time and if it does take a long time the people will get over the problem and it might not be useful anymore once the law is passed. Or on the other hand it will be so far fetched that the law wont help.

Democracy clearly has more advantages than dictatorship. In Democracy, people are always happy and comfortable because they know they have rights and that they have a voice in the country and they can know they are living in a safe country. We can never trust 1 person to rule the whole country. Because his objective is to remain in power and doesn’t care a lot about the people.

Argument 2:

Democracy is clearly better than dictatorship because it is really rare that we can hope a good dictator comes around. This is a really hopeless situation and this clearly supports that democracy has more rights and people can be more comfortable. http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/democracy

in this website, it shows the rights and the real meaning of democracy, it clearly give people rights and this clearly supports my statement.

One of the reasons for why a dictator can be harsh is especially because he wants what is best for his country, although people may not see it that way, a dictator is still defending their country and can help shape a good future for their country

http://occupytheory.org/list-of-pros-and-cons-of-democracy/

In this link it says that a democracy can go bad due to poor leadership, the minorities of people, and an inefficient and slow government system. As you are saying people do have more rights and may feel more comfortable but those rights can be taken to the extreme and can sometimes end up in breaking the law. Also if there can be poor leadership in the government because since people do have freedom of speech there will also be uneducated people who don't know what they would be voting for for the decision.
