Democracy vs Dictatorship Debate #G5

Could a dictatorship work better than a democracy?

A dictatorship is better

Side Score: 20
VS.

A democracy is better

Side Score: 15
2 points

Opening Statement:

I believe that a dictatorship would work much better than a democracy for multiple reasons. It is a much more straightforward way of ruling, and would allow more thought out rules compared to a democracy. Overall, a dictatorship is better and more efficient than a democracy.

Argument #1:

A dictatorship has never been said to be cruel or harmful, in fact it started off in 510 BC in the Roman senate and only for emergency states, as it was thought that it would be better if only one person made the decisions at certain times. The term “dictatorship” simply describes a person in power. Whether it is a good thing or a bad thing depends on the person who becomes in charge. Believe it or not, there are actually people out there who want to come into power for the benefit of the people, instead of for selfish reasons. Those are people that make dictatorships work and it isn’t the type of government itself that is at fault if it turns out differently.

Most people think dictatorships won’t work, however proving this wrong is President Paul Kagame of Rwanda. He came into power, and used all that power, to stop the extreme genocide that had been happening in the country for about 100 days, a genocide where roughly 800,000 people died. He’s helped rebuild and reshape Rwanda to their best shape yet. Dictatorships can overall be very beneficial for a country because not all dictators are cruel.

A dictatorship has been said to be cruel or harmful. Let me talk about Hitler or even Mussolini. Some dictatorship can be cruel and dangerous because of what they do to citizens.

They both did terrible things because of how much power they had.As it is only on person in power the decisions are not always right or concrete. Dictators usually dont get elected by the citizens, they just "decide"to be in power so they dont let the people be against the government , nor have their word, and be any religion they want.

While this may be true, there are also dictators who are very beneficial and who are actually good for the country. It all depends on the people themselves, not the government type itself.

For example, President Paul Kagame of Rwanda came into power, and used all that power, to stop the extreme genocide that had been happening in the country for about 100 days. A genocide where roughly 800,000 people died. He’s helped rebuild and reshape Rwanda to their best shape yet. He was a very good dictator and was actually beneficial, so not all of them are cruel.

There are also dictators who come from a democracy and from having power through a democracy. So, as a matter of fact, leaders in a democracy can also end up being harmful and cruel. For example, the leader of Putin in Russia is starting to be considered a dictator, even though he was voted into power. Another example is the leader of Turkey, who is pretty much a dictator now, however, he was also voted into power.

Argument 2

Dictatorship is better because it is way more efficient than democracy. In democracy, it takes a lot of time and money for election, in 39th general election. It took 272 million dollars. Compare to that, dictatorship is a lot more efficient than democracy, because it has less options , it takes less time to process something.

I agree with this because it is true that a dictatorship is more efficient. If there is a serious problem in a democracy, it would take so much more time to resolve it if you get the people involved. In a dictatorship, serious problems (and all problems) would be addressed quickly compared to a democracy.

Side: A dictatorship is better

Dictatorships dont really care about serious problems unless it affects the dictator himself. You might be right on the fact a democracy gets a lot of people involved and take time to resolve it but it is better to take a little more time to resolve a big problem which will then help the country than resolving a serious problem in a short amount of time that will just make everything even worse than before.

Side: A dictatorship is better

Also, dictatorship doesn't need election to process.

When democracy is making a law, it has to pass many procedures to make a law, however in dictatorship, it takes less time to make a law or decide something.

Side: A dictatorship is better

The election process is a good thing, having one means that the leader will probably be a good one. that he will please the citizens. In a democracy, as the leader doesn't get elected,a lot of people dont like him and he usually harms and "destroys" his people.

A democracy works way better because the decisions are made to please the citizens. It may cost a lot of money but it is for a good reason, it is for the best. As you said a dictatorship has less options which is a bad thing because all of the options might be terrible ones that are bad for the population. Dictators treat the people really bad for something to process pretty quickly whereas a democracy listens and takes time to make the decision help the country.

A democracy only takes time to hear different people's opinions, which is often very biased. However, in a dictatorship there is also some time taken by the dictator to make his decision to best benefit the country. With this time, he/she can analyze every aspect of the problem and see the pros and cons of different decisions, instead of acting on people's biased opinion.

Not every law that are made in democracy by citizens are successful. Some people might agree with a law but others might not. For example in South Korea, government is trying to make law that government can see people's phone and devices to prevent terrorists attacks. However most of people are disagreeing with because their privacy.

Not every dictators treat people harsh, and harsh rules can be beneficial for country because it causes less crime. Also because of harsh rules, government is stable, there is no opposing groups to government

Argument #3:

A dictatorship is better because in a democracy, people do not have the experience, knowledge, and overall awareness of all aspects to make decisions for themselves. They don’t know what’s best for themselves compared to someone who actually takes the time to study and criticize laws and changes for a country and the benefit of the people. Some people don’t even know the political issues at hand, so how are they supposed to give a viable opinion of it? In a dictatorship, leaders study the issue precisely and know all aspect of the issue in order for the solution to benefit the community.

Most of the dictators dont really know what they are doing. They just want to get into power to decide for a whole country and feel important. It is true that some people that vote dont know a lot about the political issues but they for sure know what is needed for them to be able to vote.

Government officials will have obligation to the citizens who voted for them, they owe their success to the citizens. It can help these officials work towards policies and goals they were elected to impose.

It is a stretch to say that dictators do not know what they are doing, as many do and many are appointed because they are believed to be good leaders. While some may not be, some are. On top of that, some democrat leaders may also not be good leaders, but that happens everywhere and is not really because of the government type itself.

Closing statement:

To sum up, dictatorship is better than democracy because a dictatorship doesn’t has to be cruel, it is more efficient and all aspects are taken into consideration. A greedy ruler can happen in a democracy as well, not only dictatorship, a democracy generally emphasizes quantity over quality.

Side: A dictatorship is better

Opening Statement:

A democracy is BETTER than a dictatorship for many reasons. It is a government in which power is dispersed into the people through elected representatives. Dictators have shown how terrible they can be, they abuse their power, kill innocent people and don't give any rights to the citizens. However, a democracy gives the people freedom, freedom of speech, thoughts etc and forgives the people for their mistakes. It also imposes equality, and lets the people have their say in the government.

Side: A democracy is better

Argument 1: Human rights

Democracy is better than a dictatorship throughout its human rights principles.

Democracy holds the values of freedom, respect for human rights and principle of holding periodic and genuine elections. A democracy provides the natural environment for the protection and an effective realization for human rights.

Side: A democracy is better
sofialadak(21) Disputed

While a democracy does allow human rights, so does a dictatorship. A dictatorship itself says that there is one person in charge, but that doesn't exactly mean that they will not have basic human rights such as freedom of speech. That all depends on the dictator himself.

Kalia(13) Disputed

How does it allow human rights? As you said it depends on the dictator himself, well most of the dictators did not allow human rights and there isn't freedom of speech in a dictatorship. Dictators decide for their country, and do not let anyone have their say in the decisions, they only think about what's good for them not their people. Democratic countries help make better improvements to the society than other governments because people are free to work and think and believe what they want.

Not only democracy gives human rights to people, dictatorship can be also provide natural environment for the protection and right.

Side: A dictatorship is better

Dictators only care about themselves, not about their people. If people are against the government, they will usually punish or even kill them. The "rights" they give are "good" rights only for the dictator himself not the citizens.A democracy gives the people the right to have their say in the government, the citizens are free.

Side: A democracy is better
1 point

Also there is some countries that do not give freedom of speech or publish. Some democracy governments stops them when it contains information that is against to them.

Side: A dictatorship is better

Argument 2: Transparency in the government

Elected representatives in a democracy have direct relationships with the country's citizens. In which whose votes encourage the winner to act honestly by representing the people's will. The various laws, constitutional provisions, and internal regulations found in democracies reflect the idea of those who work for the government. Whether they are appointed, elected, or hired, they owe a high level of accountability to the public.

Side: A democracy is better
sofialadak(21) Disputed
1 point

While it is true that democracies have a relationship with the people, it is only the majority vote that gets chosen. While a democrat leader might get influenced by the people on his decision, he still generally has final say and the people may be influenced by his opinion as well. Many democrat leaders also end up becoming dictators as greed for power takes over them, and the relationship with the people is then gone. This happens to be how many dictators come into power, so the relationship with the country's citizens is not always there in a democracy after a certain period of time.

Side: A democracy is better
1 point

It is true that some democrat leaders end up becoming dictators but that is really rare. Most of the leaders stay democrat and continue to help and try to do their best for their people until someone else gets elected.

Side: A democracy is better

Argument 3: Government

In a democracy the power is spread out. It isn’t one person who holds all of the power, or even the majority of the power. And that helps to prevent, corruption and the exploitation of the people.

Side: A democracy is better
1 point

When the power is spread out, the fact that there are so many people's opinions can lead to a lot of confusion. When so many people's opinions are inputed, especially in a voting matter, only the majority vote's opinion actually gets addressed. If you strongly believe something, however not as many people believe it, then your opinion will not be heard, even if it is morally a better option.

Side: A democracy is better
1 point

Thats why the final decision is taken by one group of people. Everyones voice is heard to make the final decision a good one. Dictatorships usually don’t last long as their is only on person in power. There’s high chances that the people will do anything to overthrow the government. Dictators will never accept someone else to take their power, so to retire their power is usually taken away by the people

If the dictator dies, a lot of problem is created because no agrees on who the power is going to.

Side: A democracy is better
Miro7021(8) Disputed

Even if power is spread out, there are still corruptions. To be majority, political parties bribe or cheat elections.

Side: A dictatorship is better

Closing Statement:

A democracy is BETTER than a dictatorship because of how it imposes equality, freedom of speech and thoughts and lets the people have their say in the government. However, a dictatorship controls everything and decides for the citizens. There isn't any freedom and the people usually hate their dictator. To conclude, a democracy is way better than a doctoral for multiple reasons.
